Contribution Criteria

We make regular donations to charitable community groups.

Organisations that might not qualify for donations as a charitable organisation can still apply to OceanaGold for assistance in the form of funding.

Below outlines everything you need to know about our contributions process, and you'll find our application form at the bottom of the page.

What we fund

Our contributions portfolio focuses on three key areas of involvement:

Education

Making a difference for student learning outcomes

Community

Enriching experience for the local community

Health

Promoting and encouraging healthy lifestyles

These can include funding for monetary or charitable donations, education or activities, school fairs, recreation centres, or requests for travel or general operating expenses.

How we allocate funds

The Macraes Funding Committee meets bi-monthly to consider the written requests that have been received by the 15th of the previous month. The Committee works within a budget and uses the following guidelines when considering applications:

  • The application’s project principles are consistent with OceanaGold values.
  • The application is for an activity that will take place within the Waihemo Catchment War of the Waitaki District and the East Otago area*, and the benefits will be apparent in this area.
  • Education funding will also be considered for Waitati, Warrington, Karitane, Waikouaiti, and Middlemarch areas.
  • The organisation requesting funds is used/supported by the community and provides services to the youth, aged, disadvantaged and/or needy.
  • The recipients have demonstrated an ability to help themselves.
  • The project being funded will deliver sustainable benefits to the community.

* East Otago area includes: Waikouaiti and Karitane.  Exemptions will be considered for requests from Middlemarch, Hyde, Warrington and Waitati.

The application request may be declined for any of the following reasons:

  • The application will not provide a local benefit.
  • The application form is incomplete.
  • The assistance given would be used for a business or commercial venture.
  • We have provided regular assistance in the past and the applicant is not applying to other funders.
  • The applicant has not provided enough detail in the request to enable the company to assess whether the assistance meets criteria to approve or decline the application, or the applicant failed to supply the completed form or receipts.
  • The application is for an individual*.
  • The application is for naming rights of a building, property, sports teams, or event.
  • The application is for a conference*, film or documentary production*, or an event outside of New Zealand*.
  • The project is deemed to be politically or religiously motivated.
  • There could be legal issues that could implicate OceanaGold.
  • The assistance requested is to be used to clear/help clear a debt.
  • The applicant has made no/little attempt to acknowledge any past assistance from OceanaGold.
  • The request is retrospective.

*Exemptions may be considered.

After the funding allocation meeting, each applicant is informed of the outcome of their request. Successful applicants for financial assistance are required to provide bank deposit slips to enable funds to be deposited directly into the recipient’s bank account.

Our Macraes Funding Committee will then initiate procedures to requisition payments or arrange in-kind support. Reply letters are mailed out and a feedback form and self-addressed envelope are enclosed so recipients have the opportunity to rate our performance, make any comments and consider ways they might acknowledge the assistance we have provided.

Charities

OceanaGold Macraes will consider making donations to local charities. Charitable community groups should register with the Charities Commission. Registration will allow charities to maintain a tax-exempt status and will also prevent the benefactor from becoming subject to gift duty on donations it provides.

Not all non-profit organisations are considered by the Charities Commission to have charitable status. Sport and recreational clubs, for instance, are unlikely to be able to register with the Charities Commission. The Charities Commission can confirm the status of your organisation or club. Schools are treated in a similar manner as charitable organisations and maintain their tax-exempt status.

How will you acknowledge OceanaGold Macraes?

  • Erect signage or borrow some of our core flute signs.
  • Mention us in your newsletter, website or Facebook page (please ensure you have the correct spelling of OceanaGold Macraes).
