The Macraes Operation leadership team draws on their extensive industry experience from across the mining and minerals sectors. They are responsible for the safe operation of the Macraes site to continue to mine gold for a better future.
James has more than 15 years of experience in the mining industry, with extensive time working in leadership and operational roles at underground operations throughout Australasia and is a holds a Bachelor of Mine Engineering from University of New South Wales. During his time at OceanaGold, James has led the development and commissioning of the Macraes Operation’s second underground mine the Golden Point Underground (GPUG) and resides in Dunedin, Otago.
Alison has more than 18 years of experience in legal and corporate governance for the mining and metals industry, and previously spent 13 years in the construction industry. She has been involved in maintaining OceanaGold New Zealand permits, approvals, and agreements reached with various stakeholders within government, iwi and the wider community and holds a Bachelor of Laws and Arts from the University of Auckland. Over the last 15 years, Alison has been involved in consenting for expansions and new developments across the company, including ongoing mine-life extensions at Macraes, Reefton through to its closure in 2016 and at Waihi since its acquisition in that same year.Based in the OceanaGold Dunedin office, Alison resides in Waikouaiti, Otago.
Paul has more than 30 years of experience in commercial, finance and procurement management for the mining and manufacturing industries across both New Zealand and Australia. During his time at OceanaGold, Paul has been involved in technical studies, expansions and new developments across the company, including the commissioning of the Haile Gold Mine Project. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce from University of Otago and is a Certified Practising Accountant. Paul resides in Dunedin, Otago.
Thomas has more than 15 years’ experience in continuous improvement and operational leadership within the mining, metals and heavy industries. After graduating from RMIT University in 2006 with degrees in Chemical Engineering and Business Administration he worked as a graduate engineer in aluminium smelting where he was introduced to the Lean Six Sigma improvement process. Since then, his passion for continuous improvement has grown and has been involved in transformation and improvement initiatives at multiple sites across Australia and New Zealand. Thomas resides in Dunedin, Otago.
Suzanne has more than 13 years of experience in resource consent and policy, alongside experience in the construction industry, and holds a Master of Science with Honours from the University of Canterbury. In her role at Macraes, Suzanne is responsible for extending and operating the life of mine while ensuring OceanaGold is an environmentally and socially responsible organisation. Suzanne and her team are the liaison and relationship connectors between the Macraes community and surrounding landowners and leasee, council, DoC, Fish and Game, and Iwi.

Cindy has spent more than 20 years in Safety, Health and Environment roles in the petrochemical and coal mining industries. Her areas of expertise include occupational health and safety, risk management, high severity incident investigations and safety improvement plan development. Cindy resides in Dunedin, Otago.
Jackie has been a lawyer for more than 20 years and has worked with OceanaGold, first in private practice and now within the in-house legal team, for over 12 years. With experience in litigation, local government, and environment law she has assisted OceanaGold obtain minerals permits, land access, resource consents, and other regulatory approvals required to operate and maintain compliance across its Macraes and Waihi operations and Reefton restoration project, and to respond to legislative and policy changes. Jackie leads a team that supports the production of robust commercial, procurement, and property agreements for OceanaGold. An Otago University Alumni, holding a Bachelor of Laws and Arts (Hons), Jackie works and resides in Dunedin, Otago.
Pieter has more than 25 years of technical and operational open pit mining experience in New Zealand and Western Australia. He holds a Bachelor of Mining Engineering from the University of Auckland and resides in Dunedin, Otago.
Brigid has more than 25 years of experience in Human Resources, with 11 years in the mining industry. She has been involved in training and development in the extractives and manufacturing sectors and holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Canterbury. During her time at OceanaGold, Brigid has taken on leadership roles at both the Waihi Operation and the Macraes Operation and is responsible for the recruitment, training, retention, and compliance of employees. Brigid resides in Dunedin, Otago.
Quenton has more than 25 years of experience in the mineral processing and mining industry, starting in Western Australian nickel and leading to gold at the Macraes Operation since 1999. He has been involved in industry advancing technologies such as flash flotation, pressure oxidation, large mechanical tank flotation, and fine grinding. During his time at OceanaGold, Quenton has taken on leadership roles at the Reefton Restoration Project (previously Globe Progress Mine), the Haile Gold Mine in South Carolina, and the Macraes Operation. His rural farming upbringing surrounded by mining led him to complete his degree in Applied Science, Metallurgy and he now resides in the seaside community of Warrington, Otago.
Knowell has 30 years’ experience in the mining and minerals industry and has worked for mining and minerals consulting companies in New Zealand, Australia, Botswana, Vietnam, Philippines, and Zimbabwe. He has been involved in development of new mining projects, production, and development of strategic growth of new and existing mines. Knowell holds a Bachelor of Mining Engineering and resides in Dunedin, Otago.
Jol has more than 30 years of experience in mining in New Zealand and Australia across a range of hard rock mines, including the OceanaGold Waihi Operation in the North Island of New Zealand. During his career, Jol has led the establishment of several underground mines and has been involved in emergency response teams throughout the minerals industry. Jol holds a Bachelor of Mine Engineering and resides in Warrington, Otago.
